Understanding the NDIS

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a federal government program that provides funding to Australians under 65 living with a permanent and significant disability. It gives participants choice and control over the supports they receive — so you can live more independently, participate in your community, and achieve your personal goals.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the NDIS creates an individual plan for each participant — based on your specific disability, your circumstances, and what you want to achieve. Funding is allocated across different support categories and can be used with registered providers like NurseCare Connect.

The NDIS also recognises that families and carers play a crucial role — so supports can include assistance that helps the whole household, not just the participant.

Getting started

How to access the NDIS

Not sure where to start? Here's how the NDIS access process works from your first enquiry to your first support.

01

Check your eligibility

The NDIS is available to Australians under 65 with a permanent and significant disability. You can check eligibility on the NDIS website or call 1800 800 110.

02

Apply to the NDIS

Submit an Access Request by phone or online. You'll need supporting evidence from your treating health professionals about your disability and how it impacts daily life.

03

Attend your planning meeting

An NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) will meet with you to understand your goals and create your first NDIS plan.

04

Choose NurseCare Connect

Once your plan is approved, you can choose us as your registered provider. We'll work with you and your support coordinator to start delivering your supports.

How funding works

Your support budgets

A plan can hold four budgets, each with its own categories. Not every plan has all four — it depends on what you were assessed as needing. Most of what we do sits in Core, the largest and most flexible of them.

🏠
Core budget

Everyday supports and disability-related needs. The most flexible budget — funding moves between its first four categories as your needs change through the year. Home and living is the exception.

01 · Assistance with daily lifeWe deliver

Personal care, household tasks and respite in your own home.

02 · TransportWe deliver

Getting you to appointments, activities and the shops when we are the ones driving.

03 · ConsumablesWe deliver

Everyday disability-related items — continence products, gloves and PPE — plus low cost assistive technology under $1,500, which needs no quote or prior approval. Browse the shop →

04 · Social, economic and community participationWe deliver

Getting out — appointments, shopping, social and recreation.

16 · Home and livingWe deliverStated

Supported independent living and other rostered support in a shared arrangement. Stated in your plan, which means this funding is tied to home and living and cannot be moved to anything else.

📈
Capacity building budget

Building skills and independence over time. Funding is held per category and cannot be moved between them.

07 · Support coordination

Help understanding your plan and connecting with providers.

09 · Increased social and community participationWe deliver

Skills and confidence to take part in community life.

12 · Health and wellbeingWe deliver

Managing the impact of your disability on your health.

15 · Improved daily livingWe deliver

Therapy, assessment and training to build independence. Community nursing can be funded from here or from your Core budget, depending which one your plan uses.

Improved living arrangements, relationships, learning, choice and control, finding and keeping a job, behaviour support

The remaining capacity building categories.

🔧
Capital budget

Higher-cost equipment and housing. Stated supports — the funding is tied to the specific item it was approved for.

05 · Assistive technology

Higher-cost equipment and devices, quoted and approved for the specific item. Anything under $1,500 is low cost AT and comes out of Consumables in your Core budget instead.

06 · Home modifications

Changes to your home so you can live in it safely and independently.

17 · Specialist disability accommodation

Housing designed for very high support needs. This pays for the dwelling itself rather than the support delivered in it.

🚐
Recurring budget

Paid straight to you at regular intervals rather than claimed by a provider.

Recurring transport

A set amount paid to you through the year for taxis, rideshare and other private travel, at one of three levels. Different from the Transport category in your Core budget, which is what a provider claims when they do the driving.
